Classification of Underwater Color Images with Applications in the Monitoring of Deep Corals Reefs

چکیده
Coral Reefs ecosystems have been impacted by natural and anthropogenic effects resulting in a decline of coral communities worldwide. This decline in coral reefs has an ecological and an economical impact in tourist areas and marine ecosystems due to beach activities, scuba diving, and fishing. Monitoring of coral reefs is made by marine biologists using traditionally diving techniques. The main purpose of this work was to develop a classification algorithm for digital benthic images with applications in the monitoring of deep coral reefs in order to calculate the percent of living coral area on the sea bed. At depths beyond approximately 30 meters the absorption and scattering properties of the water do not allow the use of remote sensing. In these cases, other imaging platforms, such as, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) are needed. The AUV images present objects with greater spatial details. The classification challenges, however, arise from the common color statistics, non-uniform illumination, and the high concentration of noise introduced by the attenuation and scattering of the light by the water column. Specific Thermal Regime and Coral Bleaching Pattern in Hengam Island, the Eastern Persian Gulf
Thermal anomaly is among factors initiating coral bleaching and mortalities and threatening coral reefs worldwide. Therefore, susceptibility of corals to thermal stress is a central concern in reef conservation. In this study, we evaluated underwater temperature during 2012-13 and bleaching status of corals during summer 2012 in Hengam Island located in the eastern Persian Gulf. Hengam coral...

Autonomous repair of deep-sea coral reefs is a recent proposed idea to support the oceans ecosystem in which is vital for commercial fishing, tourism and other species. This idea can be operated through using many small autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and swarm intelligence techniques to locate and replace chunks of coral which have been broken off, thus enabling re-growth and maintaining...
متن کاملBiodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
متن کاملSpatial variation of symbiotic Dinoflagellates on coral reefs of the northern Persian Gulf
Density, mitotic index, Chlorophyll-a content and cell size of symbiotic dinoflagellates of dominant reef-building corals were measured at two different depths in Kish Island and from one depth of Larak Island in the Persian Gulf. The higher densities of symbionts were found in shallow waters of Kish Island. However, ANOVA analyses of the mitotic index yielded mixed results. The cell sizes of s...
